How to Connect your Macintosh to the WCER Network
Use these directions if you are located in the Educational Sciences building, and you have a wired connection (that is, your Mac is connected via a cable that runs from the Mac into a jack in the wall).
- In the Finder, click the Go menu, then choose Connect to Server. The Connect to Server dialog box opens.
- In the field labeled Server Address, enter the characters smb:// followed by the name of the server, then click Connect. For example, to connect to the redwood server (which has the project drives), enter smb://redwood then click Connect. Or, to connect to the cedar server (the home drives server), enter smb://cedar and click Connect. A dialog box labeled SMB/CIFS Filesystem Authentication opens.
- In the field labeled Workgroup/Domain enter SOE-AD. (Note that this might already appear in the field.)
- In the field labeled Username enter your WCER username, which is the same as your wisc.edu NetID. (It’s the name before the @ symbol of your wisc.edu e-mail address.)
- In the field labeled Password, enter your WCER password. This is NOT your wisc.edu password, but is a different, more secure password, which you chose when you set up your WCER account. (If you have forgotten this password, or if you discover, when you try it, that it has expired, contact WCER Computer Services to get a new password.) Click OK. A dialog box labeled SMB MOUNT Select a Share opens.
- In the SMB Mount dialog box, click the pull-down menu and choose the project or home drive that you want to connect to, then click OK. The network drive appears as an icon in your Finder.
To disconnect from the WCER network, drag the network drive icon to the trash can on the toolbar. As you drag the icon, notice that the trash icon turns into an eject button. You are automatically disconnected from the network when you turn off your computer.
